2024 Visit by SIT Students

SIT Students Engage with Wheelchair Basketball: A Lesson Beyond the Classroom

Singapore, 13 June 2024 – In an enriching educational endeavor, a group of first-year Occupational Therapy students from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) recently visited the Wheelchair Basketball Association (WBA) as part of their learning journey. The visit, facilitated by their 'community teacher' Mr. Samy, offered an immersive experience into the life and leisure activities of an individual with a disability.

Mr. Samy, an inspiring figure in the community, shared his personal narrative, detailing how he navigates daily life, finds motivation, and adapts to enhance his occupational performance. The students were able to gain firsthand insights into his lived experiences, enriching their understanding of disability beyond theoretical knowledge.

The highlight of their visit was tagging along with Mr. Samy to one of his favorite leisure activities – wheelchair basketball. This dynamic and inclusive sport provided the students with a unique perspective on the importance of physical activity and social engagement for individuals with disabilities. Witnessing Mr. Samy's dedication and passion for the game challenged the students' preconceptions and expanded their awareness of Parasports.

Through this experience, the students were able to explore where Mr. Samy draws his volition – a term used in Occupational Therapy to describe the sources of a person's motivation, including values, interests, and personal causation. They observed how his involvement in wheelchair basketball not only serves as a physical outlet but also offers a sense of community and purpose.

The visit to WBA proved to be an eye-opening experience, highlighting the importance of Parasports in fostering inclusivity and breaking down stereotypes. It underscored the role of such activities in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, promoting both physical health and social well-being.

As the students reflected on their day, it was clear that the lessons learned went beyond the court. They gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience and determination of athletes like Mr. Samy and the broader disability sports community. This engagement is expected to influence their future careers in Occupational Therapy, driving them to advocate for more inclusive and supportive environments.

The Wheelchair Basketball Association continues to play a vital role in promoting Parasports in Singapore, offering opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and for the community to support and celebrate their achievements. Visits like these not only educate but also inspire future generations to embrace diversity and inclusivity in all facets of life.
